Florida’s Free Hurricane Inspections Return

Florida’s free hurricane inspection program is back. HB 7057, passed during the last legislative session, made adjustments to the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program. The MSFH program allows Florida homeowners to get a free wind inspection. The purpose for the inspection is to look for ways a home came be fortified for a hurricane. If the inspection uncovers items that could be improved, the state will match funds, within limits, for every dollar the homeowner spends. Improvements that the program will reimburse for include hurricane shutters, reinforced garage doors and roof enhancements.

More than 50,000 Florida homeowners are already on the waiting list and they should expect to be served by the end of the summer. You can apply for this by calling the MSFH helpline at 866-513-6734, or on the web at: http://www.mysafefloridahome.com/. Keep in mind though, that the waiting list will be handled first, and anyone applying for the first time should not expect to receive a free wind inspection before August 2007.
